2048 is a puzzle video game designed in March 2014 by Italian independent developer Gabriele Cirulli and published online under an open source license via Github on March 9, 2014.
The goal of the game is to drag tiles on a grid, to combine tiles of the same values and thus create a tile with the number 2048. However, the player can continue to play after this goal is reached to make the highest score possible.
Initially published under an MIT license, with no commercial or media pretensions, the game has received a lot of attention. The particularly addictive nature of 2048, in addition to being free, made it immediately famous.
Cirulli claims to have been inspired by a mobile game, 1024 by Veewo Studio, whose developer was inspired by Threes! by Asher Vollmer.
